Dr. Campos is an expert in minimally invasive surgery and therapeutic endoscopy for obesity, esophageal, and gastric diseases. Originally from Brazil, he completed his General Surgery residency and fellowship training in Minimally Invasive and Foregut Surgery at the University of Southern California under the mentorship of Dr. Tom DeMeester.

Before joining Virginia Commonwealth University, he served on the faculty of the University of California San Francisco, where he was the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program and the Center for the Study of Gastrointestinal Motility, and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he directed the Advanced GI/MIS Fellowship Program.

Dr. Campos currently holds the Paul J. Nutter Professorship of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He serves as Chair of the Division of Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Co-Director of the Advanced GI/MIS, Bariatric, and Foregut Fellowship Program, and Associate Department Chair for Ambulatory Services.

He has authored or co-authored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, with over 9,200 citations and a Google Scholar h-index of 47. He has delivered more than 290 presentations at national and international scientific meetings. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Research and Education in Esophageal and Foregut Disease, is an Associate Editor of SOARD and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Foregut journal.
